Tips to Extend the Life of Your Tyres.

Tyres are not cheap, so let’s have a look at some simple things we can do to make them last longer. The need to replace them usually surprises you at the worst possible time to find the extra money.

Here are our top tips to save money by extending the life of your tyres.

Check tyre pressures regularly.

Most people don’t know what their correct tyre pressure should be. If this is not your thing, ask your partner, a good friend or your mechanic to do this for you. It’s worth taking the time to learn the correct tyre pressure. Record it and check it at least once a month or each time you wash your car. Under or over inflated tyres wear out more quickly than they should.

Rotate your tyres

You may not have given this any thought, but your front and rear tyres don’t wear evenly. Some cars are front wheel drive and others are rear wheel drive, meaning the power from the engine is directed to the drive wheels. It’s only natural that the drive wheels are under more load, and more friction with the road. Ask your mechanic how often your tyres need to be rotated.

Use a good tyre cleaner

Brake dust, road grime, sun, mileage and age can all lead to the early deterioration of your tyres. Regular checks will identify any signs of wear and may allow you to repair your tyres rather than replace them. If you use a professional to wash your car, they can also apply the right products to clean and care for your tyres at the same time.

This is a great start, but there are a few other things you can do.

Extra Tips

  • Slow down. High speed driving, hard cornering, aggressive steering and hard braking will wear your tyres and use more fuel.
  • Match all four tyres. If a tyre needs to be replaced, it’s best to replace it with a matching tyre for safe handling as well as even wear and tear on all four tyres.
  • Replace worn suspension Worn wheel bearings and shock absorbers are hidden enemies of car tyres. Scheduled servicing and replacement will take unnecessary load off your tyres and they will last longer.
