5 New Year Resolutions for your Home

When it comes to new year resolutions, don’t forget about your home!

The new year is a great time for planning improvements in all areas of our lives, including our homes and the way we choose do run our households.

Many Australians have been spending a lot more time at home since the start of the Covid-19 global pandemic.

This has given us ample time to consider all those odd jobs that need doing and home improvements that you’d like to make.

Let’s make 2022 the year to resolve to complete all those projects.

To get you started, here’s a list of five New Year’s resolutions to improve your home and household practices.

#1: Cut your carbon footprint

As far as resolutions go, improving your carbon footprint is a motivating place to start.

Going green could be a great way to make this year truly remarkable.

While you could go all out and buy solar panels and a hybrid car, there are much cheaper and simpler ways to cut your use of energy.

You could:

  • Learn to recycle properly;
  • Make an effort to turn off all lights whenever you leave a room;
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or massaging your shampoo into a lather;
  • Use reusable shopping bags;
  • Reduce your meat consumption;
  • Buy locally-sourced groceries whenever possible; and
  • Stop buying plastic food wrap.

By making these small changes, you’ll not only contribute towards a better planet but, in many cases, you will reduce your bills.

If you want to take home energy saving measure further, you could also think about sealing any gaps around your home that might affect the efficiency of your heating and cooling usage.

If you’re not a particularly handy person with home renovation undertakings, hire a handyperson to come and silicone gaps around your windows, or to install foam seals over any gaps around your doors.

#2: Create a health-orientated kitchen

The kitchen is known as the “heart of the home” for a reason.

The kitchen is where delicious and nourishing food is prepared, and where families gather to talk and eat.

Make 2022 the year that you reorganise your kitchen into a health-orientated hub where nutritious snacks and ingredients are accessible for every family member to find.

Look up some easy, healthy recipes to turn into weekly staples.

Place packets of chips and chocolates at the top of the pantry, making way for easy-to-reach nuts, granola bars and dried fruits.

Consider subscribing to a grocery delivery service, such as Jim’s Home Fresh, to ensure that you have fresh produce readily available at home.

Jim’s Home Fresh offers a great range of quality produce delivered in eco-friendly packaging at affordable prices.

Start 2022 with a fresh kitchen to inspire a year of healthy choices!

#3: Get your space organised

Decluttering is a great solution to help you to your new year in a healthier, happier home.

In fact, it’s probably the best and cheapest way to feel better about your home, provided you can devote the necessary time to doing it.

Once your home has been decluttered, resolve to only bring things you genuinely need into the house.

You can go about decluttering your home in two ways, depending on how you work best and how much time you have allocated to the job:

Resolve to do a little bit every day.

It’s your resolution, so do it your way!

You could choose to set yourself a reminder every day of the year to throw away or donate something that you no longer need.

While it may seem small, that’s still 365 things by this time next year!

Go all out.

If slow and steady isn’t your thing, set aside one or two full days to get the job done fast.

Set up boxes by your front door labelled “op shop” and “bin” to keep track of what you want to donate and what no longer has use to you.

#4: Create some quality family time

Make small home improvement projects a family affair – not only will you get the job done more quickly, but you’ll spend some quality time with your family while you do it.

By the time you’re finished, you’ll have improved your living spaces and have some beautiful memories to share.

Home improvement projects don’t have to be expensive or complicated. You could:

  • Look on Gumtree for free pallets to convert into planter boxes.
  • Scour second-hand listings for old picture frames to restore. You can paint them to make an eclectic and unique feature wall for family art.
  • Allow your children to paint a mural on a section of their bedroom wall.
  • Update your outdoor furniture with hand-made cushions.
  • Encourage your children to create a reading nook somewhere in the house with scatter cushions or beanbags.
  • Create a secret fairy garden.
  • Find some old bricks and build a garden path or create a veggie patch.
  • Plant a tree or some seedlings in your backyard or start a garden nursery with cuttings and seeds grown from scratch.

#5: Get up-to-date with your outdoor work

When you’re busy working throughout the year and keeping the household running smoothly, outdoor jobs tend to fall to the bottom of the list.

You may resolve to keep on top of your garden this year by creating a chore list and ensuring everyone in your household does their job.

You could assign weekly tasks to ensure the paths are always swept, the lawn is always mowed, and the weeds are kept to a minimum.

You could also give small children the job of watering your pot plants and ensuring the front gate is closed.
