From roller blinds and plantation shutters to outdoor awnings and zip-track systems, Jim’s Blinds and Shutters offers far more than basic window coverings. Alan Cossens from Jim’s Blinds and Shutters in Narre Warren explains what customers can choose from, how long installation can take, what warranties are available, and how the Jim’s model works for both customers and franchisees.

What Blinds And Shutters Does Jim’s Offer?

Jim’s Group offers shutters and blinds through Jim’s Blinds and Shutters. Alan says the range covers indoor and outdoor solutions, including roller blinds, motorised roller blinds, Roman blinds, sheer curtains, plantation shutters, cellular blinds, window awnings, e-zips or zip tracks, and folding arm awnings.

The offer has grown over time. Alan explains that the business originally started on the back of one particular blind product, but changing conditions meant the team had to build a broader range. The result is a business that can now offer “pretty much all the solutions” customers need for their windows and outdoor areas.

Customers looking across the wider network can also explore the range of Jim’s Group services.

What Outdoor Blind And Awning Options Are Available?

Jim’s offers a broad mix of internal window coverings, including basic roller blinds, motorised roller blinds, Roman blinds, sheer curtains, plantation shutters and cellular blinds. Alan highlights cellular blinds as a particularly useful option for thermal performance.

The range covers different customer needs rather than one type of product. A customer may be looking for privacy, light control, thermal performance or a different finish for a room. Alan’s approach is to discuss what the customer needs and then work through suitable product options.

Jim’s also offers external solutions, so customers are not limited to products fitted inside the home.

Can Jim’s Blinds And Shutters Help Make An Alfresco Area Usable All Year?

Jim’s can provide external blind and awning solutions designed to make outdoor areas more usable in different weather conditions. Alan says the team can install awnings on windows, e-zips or zip tracks around alfresco areas, and folding arm awnings that work like a roof solution outside.

Alan says the outdoor offer is a major part of what the business markets. The aim is to help customers protect alfresco spaces from the sun, wind and rain so those areas can be used for more of the year.

That makes the service relevant for customers who already have an outdoor entertaining area but want more protection from changing weather.

Does Jim’s Offer Payment Plans For Blinds And Shutters?

Alan says Jim’s has a Jim’s Pay Plan that can offer 12-month and 18-month options, allowing customers to spread payments rather than paying the full amount at once.

A payment-plan option is available for customers who would prefer to spread the cost.

Customers can contact Jim’s Group to ask about current options and arrange a quote.

How Quickly Will Jim’s Respond To A New Enquiry?

Alan says the team contacts a new lead within two hours, with the goal of responding straight away where possible. After making contact, either Alan or his sales representative books a suitable time to meet the customer and discuss what they need.

That first appointment gives the customer an opportunity to explain the space, the problem they want to solve, and the products they are considering. From there, the business can prepare a quote and move towards ordering if the customer decides to proceed.

Customers can also learn how Jim’s services work when requesting a quote.

How Long Does It Take To Have Blinds And Shutters Installed?

Many products take around three to four weeks from order to installation because Alan says Australian manufacturers make most of the products his business uses. In those cases, the team can usually tell a customer that installation should happen in around a month after the deposit is paid.

Some products take longer. Alan specifically mentions plantation shutters as an example of a product that may be imported. Shipping can extend the turnaround to around eight weeks.

Alan says communication matters during that longer wait. The team keeps the customer informed and can pre-book installation dates where possible, so the customer knows what to expect instead of wondering when the job will happen.

What Makes Jim’s Blinds And Shutters Different From A Large Blind Company?

With Alan’s Jim’s business, the customer can deal directly with the business owner rather than being passed between several different people. Alan says that in a large company, a customer may speak with one person on the phone, another sales representative, another person who books the installation, and then a separate installer.

That can mean dealing with “three, four, five, six different people” across one job. Alan contrasts that with his Jim’s business, where he remains directly accountable.

He puts it simply: if his business makes a mistake, “the only person who gets yelled at is me in the mirror, because it’s my fault”. For customers, the practical difference is having access to the owner, who can make decisions and take responsibility for the job.

What Warranty Comes With Jim’s Blinds And Shutters?

Alan says his business puts a minimum five-year warranty on pretty much everything it does, while some products carry a 10-year warranty. If something goes wrong within the applicable warranty, he says the team will come back and fix it.

Customers can get in touch through Jim’s channels, the website, or by calling 131 546. Because warranties can vary by product, customers should confirm the warranty applying to the specific blind, shutter, curtain or awning they are purchasing.

The combination of a defined warranty and direct access to the local business owner gives customers a clear path to raise an issue if something needs attention after installation.

Do You Need Industry Experience To Start A Jim’s Blinds And Shutters Franchise?

No. Alan says Jim’s has people who have joined from many different backgrounds and careers, and the main thing the team looks for is someone who is customer-focused. He says the rest can be trained.

Industry experience can still be useful, and Alan says they would ideally prefer people who know the industry. At the same time, he sees an advantage in starting fresh. Someone coming from another blinds business may bring habits picked up elsewhere, while a newcomer can be trained from the beginning in the way the Jim’s business expects customers to be handled.

People considering joining the network can explore owning a Jim’s franchise to understand the broader process.

What Training Do Jim’s Blinds And Shutters Franchisees Receive?

New franchisees first go through their basic Jim’s training, then Alan takes them through the blinds business from the beginning. He covers business structures, budgets, product training, suppliers, and the expected customer experience.

Alan says product training can also involve other experienced people in the group and supplier facilities, particularly for outdoor products. New franchisees are introduced to suppliers and accompanied on customer visits so they can learn how to engage with customers in real situations.

The training therefore goes beyond product knowledge. It also covers how the business is structured and how customers should be looked after. More information is available through Jim’s franchisee training.

Can A Jim’s Blinds And Shutters Franchise Offer Better Work-Life Balance?

Alan says the flexibility of running his Jim’s business allows him to handle school drop-offs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, as well as some pick-ups. He still goes out to see customers, quote jobs, and complete some installations, but he has built a team around him.

He has a sales representative who can visit customers and installers who can complete jobs. Alan still handles ordering and administration while delegating parts of sales and installation when he is training new franchisees two or three days a week.

For Alan, that structure means the business can keep servicing leads and customers while giving him more control over how he uses his time.
