As he shares, “One day my daughter turned around to me and said, ‘Hey Dad, you’re not angry anymore.’ You know, I used to always be angry because I was just so stressed with work all the time, and now I’m much happier.”

For those considering a similar transition, Chris offers this advice: “If you’re looking into starting up your own business, it’s well worth taking the time to figure out how much time and resources it will take for you to do this on your own, as in going out and buying equipment and all that sort of stuff. And then going and sourcing a customer base, compare that to what might be offered through a Jim’s franchise, and you’ve all of a sudden got a whole new world of support and a whole new set of resources out there for you to fall back on that are going to support you in that role. That’s a real plus when you’re looking at entering into a franchise.”

As he emphasizes, “If you take that away with you, you’ll succeed. But always, every day for me, keeping that in the back of my mind because it is not an easy road going down, managing your own business.”

As he shares, “The challenges of starting in your business, motivation, getting up out of bed on a cold Winter’s morning’s always hard, following up with the customers, putting yourself out there in various areas that you might be unfamiliar with around your local areas so that you can get new work, meeting new customers, tackling horrible there’s all these things that compound on you every day.”

As he explains, “The reward is you can go on holidays, you can work a 4-day week, you can still earn a good living, and I think the best part for me is one day my daughter turned around to me and said, ‘Hey Dad, you’re not angry anymore.’”

For those considering the transition to a lifestyle business, Chris advises, “Just give yourself a little bit of breathing space, take a breath, and ease into it. Because you can ease into it now because your own boss, your HR manager, is not going to yell at you unless you want to yell at yourself. And enjoy it.”

As Chris notes, “We’re all warranted, we’re all insured, we’re all police-checked, and we’re all driving around in nice branded utes, trailers, whatever it might be. As he explains, “Even as we’re talking, you know, this job’s for the most part finished that we’ve done here today, but this little 1 percentage as I look around, I can still see some weeds in the cracks of the concrete, there’s a few little weeds poking up through the garden beds. And it’s taking those, you know, it might take you 5 minutes extra to run around and just pick out things that you see in your corner of your eye, because you know your customer’s going to see them as well. And that’s what makes a huge difference in the job.”
